What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery is a safe and effective procedure for relieving neck and back pain as well as other problems that large breasts can cause. In most cases, it is recommended that teens wait until their breasts have finished developing before undergoing breast reduction. But if the symptoms make daily work difficult or impair their quality of life, breast reduction may be possible even if she hasn't finished growing. If their breasts are not yet fully developed, a second surgery may be necessary later in life. As with all surgeries, there are some risks in breast reduction. It can be uncomfortable if patient have always had plenty of breasts, fluctuations in weight, or if patient breast size has increased after pregnancy. When the breasts are out of proportion to the rest of the body, this excess weight can throw off balance and cause problems with posture, neck, or shoulders. Chronic pain in the lower back may have nothing to do with the back, and the cause of the pain may be related to the size of the chest. Breast reduction surgery can relieve tension in patient neck and shoulders as well as patient back. After breast reduction surgery, patients experience a reduction in pain and their quality of life increases considerably.

What to Expect During Breast Reduction Surgery?

Preoperative anesthesia or intravenous sedation will be provided. Small incisions are made in the breasts and excess tissue is removed as well as fat to reduce the size of the breasts. The incisions are closed and patients are discharged home for recovery. A support bra may be used to wear a bandage after surgery and to reduce swelling and minimize discomfort.
